If you weren’t checking out “The Who,” I’m sure you were here at The Roxy checking out the sold out Filter show! These pictures are some of the BEST we’ve seen - props to Voake for the amazing pictures!
The new album from “FILTER” has been out for a mere month - so, we’re so pumped to get to hear these new tunes live early in the run. They’re about half into what we hear is a pretty rockin’ tour - so come join us. Tickets are still available, but we’re pretty sure its going to sell out soon. Rumor has it…most of the tour has been sold out - so don’t miss them on the Roxy stage. Come early and catch Opiate for the Masses and The Urgency!

Filter Magazine Presents yet another night of HOT up and coming music. With The Panda Band, Sara Lov, Marty Klingman of Gliss - and new addition, OLIVER FUTURE - the Roxy will definitely be the place to be on Wednesday.
Portishead’s former DJ Andy Smith first met group frontman Geoff Barrow while the two were at school; he eventually joined Barrow’s touring band as support DJ. He also appeared with the Fugees, Republica, and Prophets of the City, and released his debut mix album, The Document, in early 1998. A follow-up was five years in coming, but The Document II proved just as varied and exciting as the first. - John Bush, All Music Guide

A one-time member of the West Coast neo-psychedelic bands the Three O’Clock and Jellyfish, Jason Falkner went out on his own by 1996, playing jagged power pop with impeccable arrangements, a clue to both his classically trained childhood and additional time spent working on the first LP by another classical popster, Eric Matthews. Born in Los Angeles in 1968, Falkner grew up listening to West Coast pop bands like Love and Crosby, Stills & Nash but later began taking piano lessons in preparation for a classical career. Pop music regained control of his life when he discovered his sister’s punk/new wave collection, and Falkner began playing the guitar, later appearing in several bands from his high school. After stints with Three O’Clock and Jellyfish, Falkner worked with Eric Matthews on the 1996 LP It’s Heavy in Here, and finally got what he had been looking for all the time: a solo deal. Through Elektra Records, he released his acclaimed debut Presents Author Unknown, also in 1996. The following year, he played on Matthews’ second album, The Lateness of the Hour, and in early 1999 issued his own sophomore effort, Can You Still Feel? It was followed in 2001 by Necessity: The 4-Track Years, a collection of home recordings, and Bedtime with the Beatles, a covers album featuring instrumental lullabies of Fab Four favorites.

Among the true talents in the late-’90s new skool of old-school hip-hop, Peanut Butter Wolf began DJing as a teenager and became quite an entrepreneur at his San Jose, CA, high school, selling mix tapes of his turntable work. He debuted on wax in 1989 with “You Can’t Swing This” on All Good Vinyl, recorded with a smooth MC named Lyrical Prophecy. By the end of the year, PBW began working with MC Charizma, and the two gelled quickly, perfecting their skills at block parties and shows with the likes of the Pharcyde, House of Pain, and Nas. Just after the duo gained a record deal with Hollywood Basic in 1992, Charizma was shot and killed.
Unsure of where to turn without the talents of his MC, Peanut Butter Wolf began issuing strictly instrumental work, including his first release, Peanut Butter Breaks on Heyday Records. Tracks followed for the Bomb label (on the excellent Return of the DJ compilation) as well as Om Records. Though the MC had ruled the world of hip-hop since the mid-’80s, selected DJ crews began to get exposure in the dance underground by the late ’90s, including DJ Shadow, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and the X Men (whose name was later changed to the X-Ecutioners, for copyright reasons). Peanut Butter Wolf joined the elite as well, recording for dance labels 2 Kool (the Lunar Props EP) and Ninja Tune (remixing the Herbaliser) as well as contributing production work for fellow old-schooler Kool Keith.
With the foundation of his Stones Throw label, PBW began developing tracks recorded earlier with MC Charizma and released work by another Bay Area crew, Fanatik. His debut production LP, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, appeared in 1999. The year 2002 brought two excellent compilations, The Best of Peanut Butter Wolf and the Stones Throw 7″ collection Jukebox 45’s. In 2003 he put out Badmeaninggood, Vol. 3 and the next year he produced a compilation CD/DVD of his label’s artists, Stones Throw 101. Since then he has focused more of his energy in building up Stones Throw, though he still performs the occasional DJ gig in Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. Peanut Butter Wolf is also a member of the L.A. hip-hop orchestra Breakestra. To celebrate the decade his label had been in existence, Chrome Children was released in collaboration with Adult Swim in 2006, and Stones Throw: Ten Years in early 2007.

Part One, “The Truth”
Four young gentlemen were born to 8 parents. One from New York, One from Louisiana, and the rest from California. Through a series of fortunate events (broken bones, concussions, divorces, successful marriages, siblings, fishing trips, and dreams), the boys all found their way to Los Angeles. The California boys had already known each other from University, and moved there together. The New Yorker moved because it was time to move, and the New Orleanite, moved because of the weather. Then through jobs, and girlfriends the fellows came to realize that they wanted to do something more with their hands, so they built bridges, and verses, and pre-choruses. The 4 guys are now The Deadly Syndrome, where all have a hand in writing the music.

The Shys (previously The Gun Shys) are a five piece rock band from Los Angeles, California. Under their previous name they released The Gun Shys EP. Their current line-up consists of Kyle Krone, Alex Kweskin, Chris Wulff, Riley Stephenson and Tony Cupito. Their debut CD, titled Astoria, was released on iTunes on June 6 2006, and in stores July 11 2006.
“Creating the best music we can and making it available to our fans has always been our number one priority in this group and now we are free to do just that. This means more new music more often for us to share with you. We have taken all matters into our own hands thus obtaining 100% creative control. We have built our own recording studio and are currently in the process of recording a brand new EP. The plan is to wrap up the recording by the end of the month and have the record available to everyone sometime in late August or early September, followed by tours of North America and the UK. Along with the record we have the freedom to release new videos, merch and other knick knacks straight from the band to you. It feels incredible to be free. Thank you all so much for your continued support and love. Because of you we can continue to make records and play our music as far as it takes us.

With these shows, we are focusing on bringing great music back to the Sunset Strip, where it belongs. The first night kicks off with KENNA, fresh off the New York bill of Live Earth, and special guest Carina Round.
We are extremely excited to announce today our new partnership with the fine folks at Filter Magazine, who will be bringing us a series of rockin’ shows weekly here at The Roxy. The time has come for Filter to ensure that good music will prevail… and reign supreme on the Sunset Strip. Filter prides itself on being a magazine for people who love music; and for the first time Filter is literally bringing these live acts to the people. Revenge of the Sunset Strip kicks off on Thursday, July 19th with KENNA, and continues with J*DaVeY and POP LEVI in the weeks to come. More “Filter Magazine’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip” shows will be annonced shortly, so stay tuned - you are not going to want to miss these parties!
