Portishead’s former DJ Andy Smith first met group frontman Geoff Barrow while the two were at school; he eventually joined Barrow’s touring band as support DJ. He also appeared with the Fugees, Republica, and Prophets of the City, and released his debut mix album, The Document, in early 1998. A follow-up was five years in coming, but The Document II proved just as varied and exciting as the first. - John Bush, All Music Guide

jasonfalkner

A one-time member of the West Coast neo-psychedelic bands the Three O’Clock and Jellyfish, Jason Falkner went out on his own by 1996, playing jagged power pop with impeccable arrangements, a clue to both his classically trained childhood and additional time spent working on the first LP by another classical popster, Eric Matthews. Born in Los Angeles in 1968, Falkner grew up listening to West Coast pop bands like Love and Crosby, Stills & Nash but later began taking piano lessons in preparation for a classical career. Pop music regained control of his life when he discovered his sister’s punk/new wave collection, and Falkner began playing the guitar, later appearing in several bands from his high school. After stints with Three O’Clock and Jellyfish, Falkner worked with Eric Matthews on the 1996 LP It’s Heavy in Here, and finally got what he had been looking for all the time: a solo deal. Through Elektra Records, he released his acclaimed debut Presents Author Unknown, also in 1996. The following year, he played on Matthews’ second album, The Lateness of the Hour, and in early 1999 issued his own sophomore effort, Can You Still Feel? It was followed in 2001 by Necessity: The 4-Track Years, a collection of home recordings, and Bedtime with the Beatles, a covers album featuring instrumental lullabies of Fab Four favorites.

Jason Falkner plays on Filter’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip on September 13th, 2007 with Castledoor and Annie Stela. Tickets are now available - call the Roxy or purchase through Ticketmaster.

Among the true talents in the late-’90s new skool of old-school hip-hop, Peanut Butter Wolf began DJing as a teenager and became quite an entrepreneur at his San Jose, CA, high school, selling mix tapes of his turntable work. He debuted on wax in 1989 with “You Can’t Swing This” on All Good Vinyl, recorded with a smooth MC named Lyrical Prophecy. By the end of the year, PBW began working with MC Charizma, and the two gelled quickly, perfecting their skills at block parties and shows with the likes of the Pharcyde, House of Pain, and Nas. Just after the duo gained a record deal with Hollywood Basic in 1992, Charizma was shot and killed.

Unsure of where to turn without the talents of his MC, Peanut Butter Wolf began issuing strictly instrumental work, including his first release, Peanut Butter Breaks on Heyday Records. Tracks followed for the Bomb label (on the excellent Return of the DJ compilation) as well as Om Records. Though the MC had ruled the world of hip-hop since the mid-’80s, selected DJ crews began to get exposure in the dance underground by the late ’90s, including DJ Shadow, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and the X Men (whose name was later changed to the X-Ecutioners, for copyright reasons). Peanut Butter Wolf joined the elite as well, recording for dance labels 2 Kool (the Lunar Props EP) and Ninja Tune (remixing the Herbaliser) as well as contributing production work for fellow old-schooler Kool Keith.

With the foundation of his Stones Throw label, PBW began developing tracks recorded earlier with MC Charizma and released work by another Bay Area crew, Fanatik. His debut production LP, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, appeared in 1999. The year 2002 brought two excellent compilations, The Best of Peanut Butter Wolf and the Stones Throw 7″ collection Jukebox 45’s. In 2003 he put out Badmeaninggood, Vol. 3 and the next year he produced a compilation CD/DVD of his label’s artists, Stones Throw 101. Since then he has focused more of his energy in building up Stones Throw, though he still performs the occasional DJ gig in Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. Peanut Butter Wolf is also a member of the L.A. hip-hop orchestra Breakestra. To celebrate the decade his label had been in existence, Chrome Children was released in collaboration with Adult Swim in 2006, and Stones Throw: Ten Years in early 2007.

Filter’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip and Stones Throw Records present PEANUT BUTTER WOLF & FRIENDS at The Roxy on Wednesday, September 19th 2007.

Tickets are NOW AVAILABLE through The Roxy box office, and will be available at Ticketmaster on Saturday, September 1st.

The Deadly Syndrome: a bio in two parts

Part One, “The Truth”
Four young gentlemen were born to 8 parents. One from New York, One from Louisiana, and the rest from California. Through a series of fortunate events (broken bones, concussions, divorces, successful marriages, siblings, fishing trips, and dreams), the boys all found their way to Los Angeles. The California boys had already known each other from University, and moved there together. The New Yorker moved because it was time to move, and the New Orleanite, moved because of the weather. Then through jobs, and girlfriends the fellows came to realize that they wanted to do something more with their hands, so they built bridges, and verses, and pre-choruses. The 4 guys are now The Deadly Syndrome, where all have a hand in writing the music.

Part Two, “The Lie”
One of them is a liar.
THE END.

The Shys (previously The Gun Shys) are a five piece rock band from Los Angeles, California. Under their previous name they released The Gun Shys EP. Their current line-up consists of Kyle Krone, Alex Kweskin, Chris Wulff, Riley Stephenson and Tony Cupito. Their debut CD, titled Astoria, was released on iTunes on June 6 2006, and in stores July 11 2006.

“Creating the best music we can and making it available to our fans has always been our number one priority in this group and now we are free to do just that. This means more new music more often for us to share with you. We have taken all matters into our own hands thus obtaining 100% creative control. We have built our own recording studio and are currently in the process of recording a brand new EP. The plan is to wrap up the recording by the end of the month and have the record available to everyone sometime in late August or early September, followed by tours of North America and the UK. Along with the record we have the freedom to release new videos, merch and other knick knacks straight from the band to you. It feels incredible to be free. Thank you all so much for your continued support and love. Because of you we can continue to make records and play our music as far as it takes us.
Always grateful,
Kyle, Alex, Chris, Riley, & Tony

Kenna

Filter Magazine Presents Revenge of the Sunset Strip featuring KENNA

The eldest son of an immigrant family relocated to Virginia Beach, Kenna began to express an interest in music upon receiving a copy of U2’s The Joshua Tree. More records by influential artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, The Cure and The Cars followed, and remain as inspiration and influence of Kenna’s music today. His debut album, New Sacred Cow, co-produced by Chad Hugo of The Neptunes, is difficult to place in a single genre, containing elements of electronica, synth pop, post rock, and house music. Two singles, “Sunday After You” and “Freetime” followed the release of the album; the music video of the latter, along with “Hell Bent”, appeared sporadically on MTV2.
His new release, Make Sure They See My Face, drops August 21st, 2007.

J*DaVeY

Filter Magazine Presents Revenge of the Sunset STrip featuring J*DaVeY

With a diverse array of influences, eclectic twosome J*DaVeY — female vocalist Jack Davey (b. Brianna Cartwright) and producer Brook D’Leau — deliberately evade the narrow categories of what urban music should sound like, not to mention that they defy normal conventions of pop music. Drawing equally from neo-soul, new wave, funk, and hip-hop, their melting pot of electronic soul and dance have made music-goers try to classify them somewhere between neo-soulstress Erykah Badu and new wave punks Talking Heads.

Pop Levi

PopLevibyMarkMcNulty1

Conceived in a London hospital and born to a Jewish doctor and a Gentile nurse, Pop Levi has led what one might call a “melodic” life. He began studying piano at 3, joined a gospel choir at 7, started collecting records at 9, and soon after wrote his first song, “Through The Window Of My Life”. He created a band with some flat mates called Super Numeri. Pop did a stint playing bass guitar on tour with Ladytron, all the while performing on occasion with Super Numeri. And eventually set out for solo success. His solo project shone mad success after SXSW 2007.

The Roxy Loves Amy Winehouse

this is from the LA Weekly…

Amy Winehouse at the roxy

U.K. soul mama gets crowned on the Sunset Strip Monday, March 19, at the Roxy
By Ernest Hardy
Thursday, March 22, 2007 - 12:00 pm

Monday, March 19, at the Roxy

Performing to a sold-out Roxy, Amy Winehouse gave a hilarious intro to the confessional song “You Know I’m No Good”: After she had betrayed a lover, he asked if she even loved him. “I told him, ‘I do love you,’ ” she recounted — adding with playful exasperation, “ ‘But, like, I get bored. I told you I’m no good!’ ” The crowd loved it — and sang every song by heart, all night long.

Winehouse’s top-to-bottom brilliant sophomore album, Back to Black (Republic/Universal), is bursting with great, quotable lines, many as wry as they are poignant. One of the best is tucked in the driving, Motown-based “Tears Dry on Their Own,” where she admits: “Even if I stop wanting you/and perspective pushes through/I’ll be some next man’s other woman soon…”

The word other is key here. That’s the woman who wears the scarlet letter — fallen, disgraced. Winehouse casually conveys volumes through a single word or phrasing choice throughout Black, a breakup album whose defining characteristic is working-class feminine wit. And I mean both types of wit — intelligence and humor, which Winehouse uses intuitively to express how obsession dovetails with addiction. References to booze and boozing, drugging and fucking-as-self-destruction crowd the text of this confessional album. The musical filter through which Winehouse pours it all is the girl-group sound of the early ’60s — the Shangri-Las, the Shirelles, the Ronettes and the Chiffons.

Live, Winehouse was noticeably nervous but utterly charming, singing for an audience who knew all the words to all the songs. She was in spectacular voice throughout, backed by a crack band (man, that horn section . . .) and two chicly attired male backup singers who energetically pulled off synchronized choreography. Winehouse’s own herky-jerky, off-the-beat dancing and ragged emulation of girl-group style somehow underscored an aura of sincerity (a matted beehive with an unkempt tail; an ill-fitting dress that kept sliding down her scary-thin frame; weathered leopard-print shoes rummaged from the back of some tranny’s closet). Her awkward performance of femininity befits a woman who can’t quite figure how to stop fucking up her relationships and her life.

backstage with amysnaged this from perezhilton.com - thanks perez for the post!

Amy Winehouse is such a hot mess!

She is the stuff of legend, and on Monday night a who’s who of hipsters and Hollywood players were treated to a tour de force performance by the Rehab chanteuse.

You never know if Wino is gonna show up to a gig or if she’ll even make it through a show, but she more than held her own at The Roxy.

Unfortunately, fans expecting to see her at Spaceland in Silverlake tonight might be a tad disappointed. We hear she might be cancelling!

Why? Because the venue is too small and they won’t allow her 10+ person band to come with her.

Hopefully that will all get sorted out, but if it doesn’t…..well, that’s Amy Winehouse for ya!

To sing the blues you must live the blues. And she lives it.
