Tuesday June 12th Lifesavas
From Rolling Stones Top 10 Artists to watch:
Hip-hop was still a fresh phenomenon when Vursatyl and Jumbo of Lifesavas met in Portland, Oregon, in the mid-Eighties. “People would tell me, ‘There’s another cat in town that dresses like you,’” recalls Vursatyl. “We were both wearing fat laces in our shoes, big bubble vests and goggles year-round. There were only a handful of us.” After spending the Nineties releasing material on their own label, Lifesavas dropped Spirit in Stone in 2003, on Quannum. But it’s their follow-up, Gutterfly, that should put them over the top. “We put it all on the table with this album,” says Vursatyl. “Who knows what will come after this?”
Each member of Strange Fruit Project sings, raps and is influenced by the constant journey of everyday life. The group has made a huge impact in a short period of time. Through innovative production and creative lyrics their music separates them from many independent artists. Strange’s 2004 release, Soul Travelin, was an underground beat banging collector’s item which included hip-hop and soul at the root of its origin.
At 6′4 (6′6 with afro), the 1/2 Armenian 1/2 Russian ANDRE LEGACY is a Los Angeles native with roots in its ever evolving hip-hop culture. Once known to “underground” aficionados as METFLY, ANDRE LEGACY has re-invented himself today as a voice of the people…the people that like to have a good time. Aside from his solo work, ANDRE is also well known as 1/3 of the notorious DYSLEXIC SPEEDREADERS (also featuring Dirt Nasty & Mickey Avalon). Most people may be familiar with their anthem, “My Dick” of which ANDRE LEGACY is credited for conceptualizing in an Asian massage parlor off of La Brea. With tons of shows under his belt in and around the United States, a growing legion of fans and hundreds of songs in the can, ANDRE will be releasing his debut album (as ANDRE LEGACY) this year on Shoot To Kill Music. Is the world ready for ANDRE LEGACY? If his live shows, catalog of songs and harem of women are any indication, then yes…the world is ready!!! Brace yourselves!!!
Hip-Hop lovers the world over have been inundated by cynics who think they’re part of a dying art form. On the contrary, the members of Now On are leading a rebirth of the very fundamentals that defined Hip-Hop thirty years ago: originality, voice, culture and of course, entertainment. In fusing and confusing this elemental barometer, Now On emerges with a grimy freshness unseen or heard to date. Consisting of emcees IX Lives (son of Larry “Squirrel” Demps of the legendary Dramatics) and Jackson Perry formerly of Funktelligence, together with Haircut of Athletic Mic League (AML), Now On is set to make their tenure in the music industry the very definition of Def.
Mandy Moore is playing June 27th supporting her new CD. Wild Hope Is Moore’s 3rd release, the first on her new label which is a “unique artist-friendly venture” with Firm Music distributed by EMI. Be sure to get your tickets now because there is only a limited number going on sale. So hurry because everyone wants Moore (sorry, had to do it).
..Making this record has been the most exciting and fulfilling creative experience of my life,.. Moore explains. ..I knew exactly what type of album I wanted to make & firmly held my ground… She continues, ..It is therefore especially rewarding to be part of a venture in which artistic freedom is encouraged,.. Moore proudly states in reference to the progressive label deal designed to better benefit artists, while affording them substantial creative input.
Mandy Moore is one of the most respectful, well rounded, and multitalented entertainers in the industry today. One of the most likeable entertainers of our time, Mandy Moore has proven that she has staying power and will continue to gain more fans all over the globe. Mandy’s new album “Wild Hope” epitomizes a labor of love and showcases Moore’s foray into songwriting. In collaboration with a slew of critically acclaimed singer-songwriters such as Rachael Yamagata, The Weepies, Lori McKenna, among others, the result of this two year endeavor is an organic, folk album with pop sensibilities boasting beautifully constructed melodies, compelling vocals and sophisticated lyrical content.
If you love great bands then you must join us this Thursday for a night of the best bands Los Angeles has to offer. I am very excited to have Pedestrian who will bring their great show to the West side for a rare treat. Fresh off recent sets with Damian Rice and My Brightest Diamond, the band is in great form and will play a late set, starting at Midnight. If you love Beck, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, The Pixies, or just great music in general, you must see this band. On Bass is my good friend and roommate Joe Karnes, the hardest working man in show business. He plays with numerous great bands and he is without doubt the best Bass player in town, and if you don’t believe me, just come see and hear for yourself. He’s in such demand that this will be his second gig that night!! Be sure to come and check them out.
Also playing is AM Pacific, who will be having their CD Release party and they are giving out free CD’s all night long. I highly recommend getting one, their unique sound is not to be missed, and this night would not have been possible without the work of their own Lisa Donelly who helped put it all together for us. Be sure to check them out as well.
Also joining the bill are Aaron Mcclain and Charles Henry, both are talented young singer songwriters, as well as Moan Red, and Supe. Please join us for some awesome bands and an amazing night of music at The Roxy Theatre. The show starts at 7:30. Hope we see you here.
Phantom Planet is an alternative rock band based out of Southern California. The band is most widely known in popular culture for its track “California“, which became the theme song for the popular Fox TV series, The O.C..
My long time friend and soon to be reggae legend(imo) Elan is playing The Roxy this Sunday, May 27th. Although he is still young, he brings years of experience rocking stages across the world singing the reggae music. He will not disappoint you, I promise. After spending years fronting the pioneers of reggae, The Wailers, he has embarked on his own journey. With help from greats such as Sly and Robbie, Fatis and Cutty Ranks among others, Elan is on his way to making his own history. Don’t miss this legend in the making.
A very cool mix of music and art on The Strip. Come on down and support the local arts community while rocking out to some great bands.
THIRD EYE GATHERING (3EG) www.3eg.org is a Non Profit Organization dedicated to supporting a community of artists and intellectuals of all mediums. They feature some of the best music and art in the Los Angeles area and they have a loyal following of attendees who appreciate esoteric art and unconventional topics like Sacred Geometry and Quantum Physics. 3EG has not done a show in over a year and a half and they are coming out of the shadows with a bang. Former Interscope recording artists, WOVEN, have been in the studio for over two years and they are making 3EG the very first gig of many, to showcase what they have been creating, locked in that studio. In addition, Reality-Entertainment recording artists, DEADBOLT ZEN, is taking this opportunity to use 3EG as a vehicle to celebrate their CD release. ANIMATRONICS and THE BLAME will also be gracing the stage, making this an awesome night for music and art lovers. A 3EG event is also known for stunning visuals courtesy of WICKS LIQUID LIGHT SHOW. 3EG’s goal is to create a community of musicians, artists, thinkers and people who appreciate art of all mediums and give them a permanent home where they can bond and exchange ideas. 3EG will also showcase a few of the best “underground artists” in the LA area like Cam De Leon and Tony Koehl.
3EG started as a yearly three day event of like-minded thinkers getting together to celebrate live music, philosophy and art under a unique culture. With four years of successful experiences under their belt, they are now ready to bring this unique experience to The Roxy. Their long term plan is to ground 3EG to its own space, which will serve as the organization headquarters to help underprivileged and disenfranchised youth/adults by acting as a community center for the arts. Because their organization is grounded in Music, Art and Philosophy, they have a unique message to offer people who may have had a difficult time connecting with other people who have other interests. Please go to www.3eg.org to learn more about the organization and events. Lastly, please go to groups.myspace.com/3EG to see more pictures.
I can only do three posts tonight because I have spent the past few hours at the ER - I promise thirteen for the next time
3. Spending Friday night at the ER is incredibly fun. Those stairs at a certain “urban” store on a certain shopping street can be vicious. Use extreme caution when walking up and down them! My sister fell down seven or so stairs and because we are just that way we laughed the entire time and three days later went to the hospital to find that what looked like a bad bruise and an intense scratch is in fact a fracture and still we laughed our asses off in the Century City ER.
2.Louis XIV!! We have them! And you want to see them!!! Tickets just went on sale and will sell out. A year ago I went with a group of friends to the Anniversary performance of Rocky Horror Show at the Hollywood Bowl and Louis XIV opened. They wore some tight ass pants. It was an amazing show… not sure if it was the mix of music and the outdoors or what it may have been but it was definitely out of control good and I can’t wait for them to be at my house, The Roxy, on 6/2/07. Go team go!!
1. I am sad and happy about the following. Sad because it has not happened sooner and happy because I am a brought back to my memories… oh those memories… About four or five years ago - prior to my stint here at The Roxy, I had recently graduated from college. I was an unemployed sad little thing with not much of a life… that is until my sister heard that a band called Phantom Planet was doing a free performance at Aron’s Records. Luckily, both of us being unemployed, we were able to spend the majority of the day sitting in front of the soon to be shut down store being the first kids in line… looking like huge fans when we had never even heard one of their songs. We sat for a few hours knitting and sucking on lollipops while we saw a line form behind us of people who were incredibly enthusiastic about seeing the band for the third, fourth and tenth time. When the sun went down we were shuffled into the parking lot. And stood amongst a crew of incredibly enthusiastic people who were very familiar with the music. The drummer came out and did a heavy kick of the bass drum that was unexpected and made me jump (embarassingly so). The band performed. The singer climbed the lighting rig (which I came to find out after the fact had sent a shock of electricity through him). Johnny Knoxville stole a CD sampler that had been given to us and confused my sister asking for some emoliient from her purse. The impression left on us was like a mean case of sugar shock (tingly and thrilling while being a little nauseating at the same time). We were so impressed with the talent of the band that my sister and I became what we like to call “Stalker Fans” and followed the band around for a week or so while they promoted their album release. Phantom Planet is the band we stalked. And what makes it so special to me is that their shows at The Roxy led me to want to work here. So I say thank you to them (Alex, Sam, Darren, Jacques, Jason - I know this is not the band as you may know it now but it was when I went nutty… these were the guys behind the cashews). Thank you greatly gents for the talent, the music, and my current amazing place in life! Don’t miss Phantom Planet at The Roxy Theatre playing with The Feeling and others for the last day of Rooney’s residency presented by Andy Dick & Frankie Fingers. The music is just the beginning!

MikeThePoet & The Poets of the Roundtable would host monthly events at 33 1/3 bookstore on the corner of Alvarado and Sunset that became critical sessions - like food to feed the fire - we all left inspired… MCs and Street Art, 40’s in brown bags outside the bookstore. Those were the days…. The Bonaventure like my compass - backdrop was always downtown LA. MIKE THE POET

Lookin forward to chillin with y’all in the desert. So raise those incense sticks high in the air and turn up those radio dials….windows down..grace slick blaring to the sky…coachmella here we come.
