Roxy Still Red Hot A Year After Chili Peppers

The Roxy thanks our friends over at the LAist for reminding us how much fun we had hosting the Zune launch Party, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers blew us away. Check out today’s front page post on laist.com.

NOVEMBER 14, 2007
A Year Ago The Chili Peppers Played The Roxy

Despite all the competition that’s around it and new clubs that are constantly popping up, the Roxy has continued to be a major player in the LA rock club scene.

It was just a year ago yesterday that the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a rockin show at the classic venue - and not only was LAist there, but we gave out a dozen free tickets to lucky wieners. Keeping the hope alive, the Roxy was home to another legendary group just a few weeks ago when the Sex Pistols played there.

And then on Friday, the B-52’s will hit the small stage on the Sunset Strip, proving that the Roxy still has it and it ain’t going nowhere. But for now let’s just harken back to a year ago when Flea, Anthony, John and that other guy brought it all back home.

Napolitano is a Concrete Blonde

Best known for her work as lead singer and bassist in the ’80s and early-’90s alternative rock trio Concrete Blonde, Johnette Napolitano is also a poet, social activist, soundtrack composer, and sculptor. Born in Hollywood on September 22, 1957, Napolitano lurked on the fringes of the Los Angeles punk and new wave scene, working at the legendary Gold Star Studios until she formed the duo Dream 6 with guitarist Jim Mankey. The pair recorded a self-titled 1982 EP produced by Jim’s brother Earle Mankey (like Jim, a former member of the first lineup of Sparks, and at the time one of the hottest producers on the L.A. new wave scene), which attracted the attention of IRS Records boss Miles Copeland. With a new drummer in Chicago transplant Harry Rushakoff and a new name supposedly bestowed by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe that was supposed to connote the band’s mix of hard and soft elements, Concrete Blonde released their self-titled debut in 1987. This was quickly followed by Free, Bloodletting (featuring the group’s biggest hit, “Joey”), Walking in London, and Mexican Moon, before Concrete Blonde split in 1995. Napolitano then moved on to two short-lived projects, Vowel Movement (a collaboration with Holly Beth Vincent of Holly & the Italians) and Pretty & Twisted (with the late Marc Moreland, formerly of Wall of Voodoo), as well as occasional Concrete Blonde reunion albums. Following this, Napolitano began a second career as soundtrack composer for small and medium-budget indie films such as Wicker Park and Underworld. She also released a pair of largely improvised and mostly electronic albums, Sketchbook and Sketchbook 2, in 2002 and 2006. Johnette Napolitano’s first proper solo album, Scarred, followed in the spring of 2007. - Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Fire in the Youth

B-Side Players is a septet led by frontman Karlos Paez and including guitarist Giovanni Mejia, bass player Gerry Guevara, saxophonist Regan Branch, percussionists Victor Tapia and Luis Cuenca, and drummer Ryan Moran. The son of a musician, Paez spent a good deal of his time growing up on the road and formed the band in 1993 in San Diego. The group built a local following and won several San Diego music awards for their blend of Latin, funk, rock, and reggae, and have toured with artists ranging from Ben Harper to Papa Roach. The group issued Movement in September 2001, which culled material from two self-released records, Renacimeinto and Culture Of Resistence. The album included a guest appearance by Herbie Hancock drummer Mike Clark and a cover of the War classic “Spill The Wine”.

Nico Stai Is Kind Of Cute!

We are so excited to welcome Nico Stai to the Roxy stage for the first time! A word of mouth artist, who’s been coined as “…the new boss” by Flaunt Magazine and compared to the likes of Matt Costa with his “achingly emotional acoustic tunes. Beautiful melodies and all the sensibilities of the purest singer-songwriters” according to Cd Review.com. We’re pretty happy to have him, along with Monster in the Machine, Robert Francis, and ROCKFOUR. Definitely a show to check out! Oh, and he’s kind of cute.

Among the true talents in the late-’90s new skool of old-school hip-hop, Peanut Butter Wolf began DJing as a teenager and became quite an entrepreneur at his San Jose, CA, high school, selling mix tapes of his turntable work. He debuted on wax in 1989 with “You Can’t Swing This” on All Good Vinyl, recorded with a smooth MC named Lyrical Prophecy. By the end of the year, PBW began working with MC Charizma, and the two gelled quickly, perfecting their skills at block parties and shows with the likes of the Pharcyde, House of Pain, and Nas. Just after the duo gained a record deal with Hollywood Basic in 1992, Charizma was shot and killed.

Unsure of where to turn without the talents of his MC, Peanut Butter Wolf began issuing strictly instrumental work, including his first release, Peanut Butter Breaks on Heyday Records. Tracks followed for the Bomb label (on the excellent Return of the DJ compilation) as well as Om Records. Though the MC had ruled the world of hip-hop since the mid-’80s, selected DJ crews began to get exposure in the dance underground by the late ’90s, including DJ Shadow, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and the X Men (whose name was later changed to the X-Ecutioners, for copyright reasons). Peanut Butter Wolf joined the elite as well, recording for dance labels 2 Kool (the Lunar Props EP) and Ninja Tune (remixing the Herbaliser) as well as contributing production work for fellow old-schooler Kool Keith.

With the foundation of his Stones Throw label, PBW began developing tracks recorded earlier with MC Charizma and released work by another Bay Area crew, Fanatik. His debut production LP, My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, appeared in 1999. The year 2002 brought two excellent compilations, The Best of Peanut Butter Wolf and the Stones Throw 7″ collection Jukebox 45’s. In 2003 he put out Badmeaninggood, Vol. 3 and the next year he produced a compilation CD/DVD of his label’s artists, Stones Throw 101. Since then he has focused more of his energy in building up Stones Throw, though he still performs the occasional DJ gig in Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the U.S. Peanut Butter Wolf is also a member of the L.A. hip-hop orchestra Breakestra. To celebrate the decade his label had been in existence, Chrome Children was released in collaboration with Adult Swim in 2006, and Stones Throw: Ten Years in early 2007.

Filter’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip and Stones Throw Records present PEANUT BUTTER WOLF & FRIENDS at The Roxy on Wednesday, September 19th 2007.

Tickets are NOW AVAILABLE through The Roxy box office, and will be available at Ticketmaster on Saturday, September 1st.

DJ Andy Smith

AndySmith_Logo_lo

Andy Smith is the originator of the major-label multi-genre mix album. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut’s Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more - The Document and its follow ups Document II and Document III filled the void.

The Document III and other mixes
Having sold in excess of 130,000 copies of The Document I and II, Andy released the eagerly anticipated The Document III on Sanctuary Records in 2005. The mix features artists as diverse as Muddy Waters, Freda Payne, Showbiz and AG, Black Sabbath and Aldo Vanucci.

The Document mix CD series reflects Smith’s well honed DJ style of playing good music whatever the genre from his mixed bag of vinyl treasures.

The series has proved so popular that Trojan Records asked Andy to breathe new life into their back catalogue by releasing a reggae spin off called The Trojan Document in 2006. Record Kicks releases Andy’s latest compilation Lets Boogaloo Volume 4 in 2007.

Portishead
Andy originally made his name back in the 1990s as Portishead’s world tour DJ reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJing. This appreciation of different genres made Andy the ideal guy to provide sample material for Portishead. These hip-hop elements helped form the basis of the unique Portishead sound.

Naughty By Nature

They’ve created infectious, chart-topping party anthems and unleashed gritty, grimy manifestos. They’ve toured the world and reigned as international superstars but still live in the city they grew up in. They’ve dominated the pop and R&B charts, all the while staying true to real hip-hop and themselves.

Naughty By Nature are arguably hip-hop’s finest group and unquestionably one of its most beloved. Since the top of the decade, the Jersey based trio has enjoyed three platinum cds, numerous gold and platinum singles, won a Grammy and helped bring hip hop culture to a whole new audience

The Shys

The Shys (previously The Gun Shys) are a five piece rock band from Los Angeles, California. Under their previous name they released The Gun Shys EP. Their current line-up consists of Kyle Krone, Alex Kweskin, Chris Wulff, Riley Stephenson and Tony Cupito. Their debut CD, titled Astoria, was released on iTunes on June 6 2006, and in stores July 11 2006.

“Creating the best music we can and making it available to our fans has always been our number one priority in this group and now we are free to do just that. This means more new music more often for us to share with you. We have taken all matters into our own hands thus obtaining 100% creative control. We have built our own recording studio and are currently in the process of recording a brand new EP. The plan is to wrap up the recording by the end of the month and have the record available to everyone sometime in late August or early September, followed by tours of North America and the UK. Along with the record we have the freedom to release new videos, merch and other knick knacks straight from the band to you. It feels incredible to be free. Thank you all so much for your continued support and love. Because of you we can continue to make records and play our music as far as it takes us.
Always grateful,
Kyle, Alex, Chris, Riley, & Tony

Kids of the Future

jonas1.jpg

Ask the Jonas Brothers who they’re hoping to turn into fans with their new self-titled CD and they won’t say “everybody.” But that’s precisely what they’ll mean. “We’re aiming for people our age,” says 17-year-old Joe. “But we also wanna get kids younger than us,” adds 14-year-old Nick. “And older people, too,” 19-year-old Kevin pipes up.

The highly anticipated follow-up to the New Jersey siblings’ 2006 debut—which featured the TRL hit “Mandy”—The Jonas Brothers is sure to make good on the band’s goal: It’s a high-energy pop-punk disc overflowing with insanely catchy hooks, muscular guitar fuzz and mature songwriting that reveals just how much growing up the boys have done since we last heard from them.

Sherwood

l_317f02887662276d1e3321e668c37827

Sherwood formed back in 2002 while attending Cal Poly State University. This quartet worked incredibly hard to push their way to the top - including landing a spot on the Vans Warped Tour as well as a national tour as direct support for Motion City Soundtrack… all without a little help from their friends. These guys worked their tushes off booking shows on their own, selling CDs on tour in order to stay on tour, among many other things. And to top it all of their music is stupendous!

Four Star Youth

4 star youth

Four Star Youth came together at a bathhouse in west Hollywood and then realized that they liked making music together too. Starting in June of 2006, Four Star Youth built up a large and loyal fan base thanks to their hard hitting emotional music, energetic live show, and extreme handsomness. “We certainly dont suck as much as we used to.” says drummer Lonnie Miller. “I think we suck more now actually.” replies Vocalist Steve Pedersen. Mike Bartak was excited to join Four Star Youth as their second guitarist in October. “I really didnt have shit to do at the time.” he explains. They soon began headlining larger venues throughout the Los Angeles Area like The House Of Blues, The Key Club, and Big Chuck’s Biker Bar and Buffet. “Having great fans this soon is a tremendously superduper totally rockin kinda thing” says guitarist Joshua Buma. “Ohhhh yeaaaahaaah” agrees bassist Bill Gower. Their debut cd “The Great Nobodies” is due out in June, a late summer tour is in the works, and the band plans to be rolling in money, dating C list actresses and snorting huge lines of coke by the end of October. Look for FSY at a venue near you or drive a little bit and find one closer to us.
