What A Weekend with SSMF

Hot Hot Heat - Hollywood, CA

Simply going off the fact that I am ridiculously tired, my feet are a little sore, my ears are ringing, and I’m slightly hungover - all signs point to SUCCESS for the First Annual Sunset Strip Music Fest.
This has been the weekend of all weekends for all involved - and all the hard work seemed to pay off. The Strip was busier than ever - the clubs were packed - fans were lined up - and everyone seemed ready for a little Rock N Roll. We were able to attend so many epic round tables and presentations reliving history of the Strip over the course of the last few days, and seeing it all come together this weekend was a clear testament that we’re doing something right. Our main man Erik Voake was snapping pics the whole weekend - so stay tuned. Cheers to all the new friends we’ve made…thanks to all the bands who went out on a limb so support us an the Festival…special props to the brains behind the operation (and an extra extra pat for our Nic)…can’t wait to get started for next year!

Theirs No Place Like Home

So, the Roxy is out of the big city…and into the country! Texas definitely is a change of pace from the usual Sunset Strip…cheers to road trips - and if you’re in the area make sure you stop by our party at The Belmont!

Our Hearts are With Heath

Like everyone else, we were shocked and saddened by yesterdays news. We have lots of people coming thru the Roxy doors night after night…but Heath was one of our all time favorites. The most polite, helpful, sincere man in town - he will be missed. His sweet accent and caring smile made even the hottest rock show- that much better. Heath, we will always think of you and our Red Hot Chili Pepper memories!

Roxy Roadtrip Detour’d Downtown

Thanks to the LA Weekly, to Goldenvoice, to all the bands, artists and djs that rocked the streets of Downtown LA. And special thanks to all of our good friends (new and old) that stoped by our booth. You made Detour a blast. The Roxy Crew had a great time hanging at our tent that was disguised as a pink disco lounge. We handed out free tickets, stickers and, most popular, our homemade Pink Glowsticks to the thousands of smiling, happy, music loving people. It reminds me that sometimes you need to get out of the office and hit the road, even if it’s just to Downtown. Can’t wait for next year. Please feel to post your own pictures from Detour below.

Heather, Bobby, Annie, Young Josh, Megan, Scottie and Trev, You all deserve a double clap. Thanks Guys!

My sister and I flew all the way out to Baltimore, MD to catch the Beastie Boys at The Virgin Music Festival but much to our shagrin our friend got a little sick and we only caught almost 3 full songs… enough to wet the craving but not enough to kill the hunger. So when we heard that our cousin bought a few tickets to The Greek we were thrilled.

A. We could catch a full set.
B. Totally a Greek virgin and have wanted to check a proper show out.

The show was masterful and we were surrounded by uber excited people thrashing around, people tossing their hair in other’s faces inappropriately, and people jumping into the aisles just to dance but quickly being kiboshed by the security. The Greek is a great outdoor theatre that I highly recommend! And The Beastie Boys may be a little older but they rock like the 20-somethings that brought it hard in 1986. Gotta love it!

$40 Dollar Parking on Sunset?

DSCN0439

… not likely. It’s come to our attention that we are stuck with this major misconception that parking is ridiculously expensive in our neck of the woods. I am here to tell you that there are three lots (that I know of) which surround us… and parking runs the mill of $5-$7. Might not be free but it is definitely better than $40.

Viva Las Vegas

Got plans for the weekend? How about a road trip to Sin City? The Roxy is proud to present the Side Lounge at the 2 year anniversary of 944 Magazine, and it’s gonna be one hell of a party. Whitestarr, She Wants Revenge, Paul Oakenfold, and a ton of other artists. Check out the flyer below (click image for full size) for more info, or check it out at www.944is2.com.

We are extremely excited to announce today our new partnership with the fine folks at Filter Magazine, who will be bringing us a series of rockin’ shows weekly here at The Roxy. More “Filter Magazine’s Revenge of the Sunset Strip” shows will be annonced shortly, so stay tuned - you are not going to want to miss these parties! Heko’s Hot Stuff

Tying bows on May and curly Q’s in June.

Here is the musical excitement of the next coming weeks:

5/21/07 Albert Hammond Jr. at the House Of Blues WeHo- such an awesome show. I saw them open for Incubus a couple of months back and their performance was absolutely the best part of the night (no offense Incubus kids). From the stage layout to the backdrop and then the band just killed it… great show.

-Albert Hammond Jr- In Transit

5/22/07 at The Troub - The Roxy ladies new Coachella jacuzzi buddy, POP LEVI with Mando Diao and The Capshuns. We love it and you will too.

-Pop Levi- Sugar Assault Me Now

5/26/07 theAUDITION: straight off a tour with Jack’s Mannequin and Head Automatica… the best boys Chicago can provide to us West Coasters (that is if your thing is Rock with a little pop/punk thrown into the mix). They are coming for a huge show at The Roxy and they come to rock!

-The Audition- You’ve Made Us Conscious

5/28/07 Phantom Planet: Andy & Frankie’s Social Club is back at The Roxy Theatre and they aim to please. Monday the 28th is the beginning of a handful of extraordinary nights in our backyard. Bring it Andy Dick! (and check out this video I found from an old school Phantom Planet performance from back in the day… maybe we can get them to do this cover again)

-Phantom Planet & Maroon Five live at The Glass House covering Hey Jude

6/1/07 The Colour: These kids are LA natives and have played The Roxy stage at least one time (that I can recall) before. Not to mention the support acts are the bomb diggity! The Colour, Simon Dawes and Takota all on one bill should be a Friday night for the books… plus what else have you got going on a Friday night in town? I say nothing as important as supporting local artists. No sir.

6/2/07 Louis XIV: I have already talked about the enjoyable time I had seeing these gents play at the Hollywood Bowl. We are super lucky that they now are playing at The Roxy. I don’t need to get into how good Louis XIV is… but I do need to get into the bands that we recently added to the bill: Gran Ronde and The Shys (who recently performed at The Roxy’s latest brilliant idea “Free The Strip”). This show is guaranteed to knock your socks off!

-Louis XIV- The Hunt

6/7/07 Melee at The Roxy: I am officially making the announcement right now that we have a promo going through 9 Star, a West side Action Sports Retailer, offering up tickets to see the show hopefully beginning Monday, May 21. Check out the store (click on the link for phone number and location) and check out this show. My little sister and her boyfriend introduced me to the band’s music a few months back right before we booked this show. Nice call Roxy crew. And the other bands playing the date ain’t half bad either: Ronnie Day, Satisfaction, The Sweet Hello

-Melee- The War

6/8/07 Ima Robot with Los Abandoned and The Hairbrain Scheme at The HOB - Ima Robot held a solid residency in my car stereo for three months without fail. And my favorite band to ever hit On The Rox’s stage, The Hairbrain Scheme are opening. In all honesty I am not familiar with Los Abandoned but the fact that they are on a bill with these other two bands speaks very highly of them. Go out and support our boys. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a guy wearing a Mexican wrestling mask… but only if you are lucky.

-The Hairbrain Scheme- My Flabby Valentine

heko’s coachella report

The desert may have been hot but the music was possibly hotter!

This was my first appearance at the much talked about desert festival in Coachella Valley. The heat was a little much to bare. Bare skin and balls were definitely the theme of the weekend. The Roxy Crew were all present and all enjoying the hell out of it. Unfortunately I only got to see a handful of bands… possibly all of LA was there and it was full time schmooze-fest. But I did get to listen to quite a few. Travis and Interpol seemed to kill and from what I have heard so did Rage. The Chili Peppers were awesome, but everytime I have seen them they have been amazing! My mission (should you choose to accept it) was to tag as many people with The fantasticly pink Roxy stickers I was blazing. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

To check out more pictures of our trip go to myspace.com/heko310

Best event of the weekend by far? Playing volley ball in the pool Sunday morning. Can’t beat a great sesh of one-armed beach ball tossing volley!!

heko’s Hot Stuff - Part Deux

I can only do three posts tonight because I have spent the past few hours at the ER - I promise thirteen for the next time

3. Spending Friday night at the ER is incredibly fun. Those stairs at a certain “urban” store on a certain shopping street can be vicious. Use extreme caution when walking up and down them! My sister fell down seven or so stairs and because we are just that way we laughed the entire time and three days later went to the hospital to find that what looked like a bad bruise and an intense scratch is in fact a fracture and still we laughed our asses off in the Century City ER.
My ever so pleasant patient!

2. Louis XIV!! We have them! And you want to see them!!! Tickets just went on sale and will sell out. A year ago I went with a group of friends to the Anniversary performance of Rocky Horror Show at the Hollywood Bowl and Louis XIV opened. They wore some tight ass pants. It was an amazing show… not sure if it was the mix of music and the outdoors or what it may have been but it was definitely out of control good and I can’t wait for them to be at my house, The Roxy, on 6/2/07. Go team go!!

1. I am sad and happy about the following. Sad because it has not happened sooner and happy because I am a brought back to my memories… oh those memories… About four or five years ago - prior to my stint here at The Roxy, I had recently graduated from college. I was an unemployed sad little thing with not much of a life… that is until my sister heard that a band called Phantom Planet was doing a free performance at Aron’s Records. Luckily, both of us being unemployed, we were able to spend the majority of the day sitting in front of the soon to be shut down store being the first kids in line… looking like huge fans when we had never even heard one of their songs. We sat for a few hours knitting and sucking on lollipops while we saw a line form behind us of people who were incredibly enthusiastic about seeing the band for the third, fourth and tenth time. When the sun went down we were shuffled into the parking lot. And stood amongst a crew of incredibly enthusiastic people who were very familiar with the music. The drummer came out and did a heavy kick of the bass drum that was unexpected and made me jump (embarassingly so). The band performed. The singer climbed the lighting rig (which I came to find out after the fact had sent a shock of electricity through him). Johnny Knoxville stole a CD sampler that had been given to us and confused my sister asking for some emoliient from her purse. The impression left on us was like a mean case of sugar shock (tingly and thrilling while being a little nauseating at the same time). We were so impressed with the talent of the band that my sister and I became what we like to call “Stalker Fans” and followed the band around for a week or so while they promoted their album release. Phantom Planet is the band we stalked. And what makes it so special to me is that their shows at The Roxy led me to want to work here. So I say thank you to them (Alex, Sam, Darren, Jacques, Jason - I know this is not the band as you may know it now but it was when I went nutty… these were the guys behind the cashews). Thank you greatly gents for the talent, the music, and my current amazing place in life! Don’t miss Phantom Planet at The Roxy Theatre playing with The Feeling and others for the last day of Rooney’s residency presented by Andy Dick & Frankie Fingers. The music is just the beginning!

heko’s Hot Stuff

Because 10 is too few and 15 is too many…

Can I just start this off asking why is thirteen a bad number? People are really freaked when it is Friday the 13th. Hotels don’t have a 13th floor… It is really intriguing. So I did some research. Did any of you know that it spawned from the Last Supper and how many people (apostles) were in attendance? Those silly superstitious folks applied it to Friday for whatever reason. I didn’t and don’t care but I am taking it back from the superstitions that tout it as bad. I know a lot of excellent people born on the 13 and occasionally their birthdays land on a Friday… no devil spawns there.

With that said I coin my first entry on The Roxy’s page as my Hot Thirteen Things to do before April 8th. I am running this backwards so don’t hate me

(something to know: most events with me are all about food or involve food)

13. I know the fad is a little over but Pinkberry is pretty amazing. So park your car at my house and join me in a short jaunt over to Pinkberry to get a Medium Plain with Pineapple and Raspberry. We can sit on our stoop and enjoy the sweet and sour yogurt that will help cool you down and help with your digestive tract. ☺

12. April 7 – Beth Ditto
The Gossip (nuf said, right?). Beth is an amazingly over the top woman and the band is so much fun. All I can say is the cupcake remnants on the carpet by the kitchen make me smile every time I step over the brown smudge that the cleaning crew couldn’t get out.

11. April 4 - Persephone’s Bees (feels like a slight throw back to the Castro District in 1979 – very hip- very hippy- super su-weet). Because this is an introduction to me you are probably not aware that half of my life I was a Nor Cal girl so I feel some major love for peeps from Oakland. Have yourself a good time making some honey with the Bees and then follow it up with a late night dinner at Fred 62 (I highly recommend the breakfast burrito if you are a carnivore).

10. April 2 – Ratatat. My friend Garsh hipped me to them. Hip Hop/Rock/Electronica?! How can things get so good… Wish that they had a guest performance with Mac Mall (that would be THE most amazing show ever)

9. I have no event to pair with this so get a group of friends together and head over to Trader Vics for some Wasabi Mashed Potatoes and some Pineapple-y umbrella drinks! I promise a good time. Only bummer is the required valet parking… but I still think it is worth it for an LA landmark (Especially since there is talk about potentially leveling it to build some luxurious suites and such).

8. My friend Bo would like to get me to go salsa dancing with her on Tuesday nights but I would rather go to Messob for some delectable Ethiopian eats. And I can usually persuade her to join if it is not on a Tuesday night! For four people you can share the vegetable platter for two. So cheap and SO yum. You may leave there feeling a little high… we did the first time we ate there.
Messob

7. A day of shopping is usually fun… even if no money ends up being spent. I recommend hitting up Marc by Marc Jacobs on Melrose followed by H&M at the Bev Center. Insiders tip: wear a skirt and a tank and you can avoid the hideous dressing room line at H&M – just head to the less frequented kids section and have your own fitting room (this is definitely not for someone who is modest because you will flash people on accident and people will give you looks like you are raping a goat).

6. Early morning jaunt to Starbuck’s on Melrose across from Urban Outfitters (they make my drink correct every single time – Iced Grande Decaf 7 pump Caramel Macchiato), they don’t say I am a sweetie for no reason. With the weather being so brilliant these days you can follow a good cup of coffee off with anything as long as you are outside.

5. If you like art and want to make a day of it I would hit up The Getty followed by a trip to Bergamot Station. Both are pleasantly placed with nice little walkabouts.

4. My favorite artist from my stint at Otis who I had the pleasure of meeting when Courtney Love played The Roxy a few years ago: Mark Ryden show at Michael Kohn Gallery

3. April 5 – Man Man. I listened to it this morning and I felt like I was in a cabaret with paintings of tightrope walking, umbrella carrying maidens (think Mark Ryden, mentioned above mixed with a little Haunted Mansion at Disneyland). Dark and evil with an uplifting cheerful chanting similar to most Klezmer music

2. Titos Tacos: bean, cheese and salsa burrito. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Don’t stress out about the line just get in, place the order and move to the side while your lady gets you all set.

1. At long last it’s here! MOSQUITO HEAD’S only ANNUAL PLAY (in my backyard no less – On The Rox)!! I am entirely biased about this because I have known these guys more than half of my life and because I consider a couple of them to be amongst my nearest and dearest. But the band only plays once a year and you never know who will jump on stage to play with them… not to mention that Tad’s package looks great (according to Ashley) in those black leather pants. You want to see this show. I promise.
