ERIK VOAKE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT: ROXY 365 – A YEAR AT THE ROXY THEATRE
By: Brent X Mendoza
For one night only, The Roxy Theatre was transported to Beverly Hills. Complete with the usual door woman and bartenders, most of the staff were present, either working or as spectators, to celebrate the work of Erik Voake. Working independently as the unofficial house photographer for The Roxy, the photog/video director has been capturing images, documenting the amazing performances and exclusive happenings at the legendary venue for the past year. Voake says, “This wasn’t about celebrities or famous people… it’s more about a venue, family owned and operated, who pull off the same talent as The Staples Center, only for 500 people… The Roxy isn’t just a music venue… it’s a community. I challenge anyone, to find another place in the world with this pool of talent”.
Known for their existing collection of works by prominent celeb photographers, The Celebrity Vault hosted the packed crowd of music enthusiasts at this gallery gala. Industry movers and shakers, city representatives, and musicians all packed the place to get a glimpse of Voake’s vision through the lens. In attendance, Lou Adler (founder of The Roxy), Cisco Adler (Shwayze), Slim Jim Phantom (Owner The Cat Club/drummer Stray Cats), Steve Jones (The Sex Pistols), and SSBA Executive Director and founder of The Sunset Strip Music Festival Todd Steadman.
With so many great shots, you would be hard pressed to rank them or make note of one over another. As an overview, the works included the performances and events at the 2008 Sunset Strip Music Festival (Juliette and The Licks, Slash, Larry King with Roxy and Whisky founders Lou Adler and Mario Maglieri respectively), Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek (The Doors), Cheech and Chong, and multiple photos of fallen Roxy brother DJ AM.
When asked for his thoughts on the photo tribute to The Roxy, current owner and operator of The Roxy Nic Adler said, “I am shocked at the turnout… I shouldn’t be though, all the faces here are a testament to the work The Sunset Strip has done to build this community”. It’s people like Voake, who are out every other night documenting The Strip that are the reason old faces keep returning and new faces keep popping up at venues like The Roxy which has thrived for over 35 years.
Always a pleasure to host industry showcases for up and coming performers. If you are someone that prides themselves on being in the know, we’ll help you out on this one. Nikki & Rich execute the mix between cutting edge and throw back - to perfection. Check out these sweet shots by Erik Voake!

It was only fitting for one of our breakout shows of 2009 to make their way back to our stage for New Years Eve! Enter: Mike Posner. We have so much confidence in this up and comer, we invited him and his friends to take The Roxy into 2010. It’s kind of a big deal…if you’ve ever been to a Roxy NYE - you know its no joke. The countdown, the balloon drop, the confetti - it’s quite an event! It’s affordable…killer lineup…and tons of VIP options. See you here!
One of the true indie darlings of 2009 are taking the stage next week - and we cannot wait to see them live. We’ve been hearing the buzz from the Eastsiders for a while - and they are even featured on everyone’s favorite soundtrack (’Twilight’ of course!). Check it next week, along with our local favs Chasing Kings and Amaad Wasif. KROQ Locals Only never fails!
A pleasant surprise to find out that the uber-cool article about Nic Adler hit the stands today in the New York Times. It’s a pretty big deal..and aside from being honored to be part of this whole movement, we couldn’t be more proud of our main man. The article is such a great way to begin to close out 2009. It’s been a tough one, and we know only better things are ahead for us. Hard work pays off, and it’s nice to be reminded of that sometimes. Thanks to everyone who comes and supports not only The Roxy - but the entire Sunset Strip!
